IPL 2013: Underachieving Pune Warriors look to shed 'whipping boys' image

New Delhi: April 2, 2013

Having finished last in the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Pune Warriors India will be looking to shed their image of whipping boys.

For the last two seasons, Pune Warriors have earned the distinction of being the favourite ‘whipping boys’. In their maiden season in 2011, they finished ninth out of 10 teams and last year they finished ninth and last.

Despite having one of the best line-ups, Pune Warriors have been the under-achievers in the last two years.

Warriors, being coached by Allan Donald, are a better balanced side this time and can surely be the team to watch out for this season.

They have a mentor in Sourav Ganguly, who led them in 2011 without much success, and an able leader in Angelo Mathews, who was appointed the captain after Michael Clarke was ruled out for the season.

Yuvraj Singh, who led the team in its first season in 2011, will surely be the player to watch out for. The team management has taken a fine decision by keeping Yuvraj free of the team’s responsibilities. Yuvraj has been a proven match-winner and will be looking to bounce back to form.

New recruits: Abhishek Nayar, Ajantha Mendis and Kane Richardson.

Players to watch out for: Yuvraj Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Angelo Matthews and Ajantha Mendis

Squad: Abhishek Nayar, Ali Murtaza, Anustup Majumdar, Ashok Dinda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Dheeraj Jadhav, Eklavya Dwivedi, Harpreet Singh, Ishwar Pandey, Krishnakant Upadhyay, Mahesh Rawat, Manish Pandey, Mithun Manhas, Parveez Rasool, Rahul Sharma, Raiphi Gomez, Robin Uthappa, Shrikant Wagh, Tirumalasetti Suman, Udit Birla, Yuvraj Singh, Ajantha Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Kane Richardson, Luke Wright, Marlon Samuels, Michael Clarke, Mitchell Marsh, Ross Taylor, Steve Smith, Tamim Iqbal, Wayne Parnell.
