Former Indian coach Gary Kirsten spoke about the differences between coaching an Indian Premier League (IPL) side and coaching a national side. The Delhi Daredevils (DD) coach expressed his satisfaction with the all-round depth of his side, and said vouched for Kevin Pietersen’s leadership skills.
In an interview with the official website of the Delhi Daredevils, Kirsten said, “I think we have a nice balance in our squad. We have sort of covered all the areas rather having strength in one area.”
When asked about the strategy of employing multiple spinners, Kirsten said, “I don’t think we want three specialist spinners in the team. I think two is enough. We have got JP Duminy who is a front line spinner these days, and we have got some other options.”
India’s World Cup-winning coach went on to talk about the distinction between the IPL and international cricket. “I think there are many different things in IPL. It’s a completely different format to really what I am used to. You have got a group of players for eight weeks. The things move lot quicker and there is lot of intensity. It’s a new challenge and I am looking forward to it,” said the former South African opener.
Kirsten ended by talking in glowing terms about the DD skipper, Pietersen. “I certainly agree with you guys that KP [Pietersen] has been an outstanding player and has been an important contributor to the Delhi Daredevils team over the past two years. The team management and owners have a lot of belief in him. Going on the back of that, there should not be a reason why he should not be one of our leaders,” he said.
