IPL 2014: Mumbai Indians have not batted as well as they could have, feels Robin Singh

Noting that Mumbai Indians should have batted better in the first phase of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament, the team’s coach Robin Singh on Sunday said the side has of late been doing well and it would like to put its best foot forward in the remaining matches.

“I think obviously we did not start very well. The first phase of the tournament we probably should have got more runs. We did not bat as we could have. Being a new side, it took a little while to sort of come together. I think the second half, in Bombay, we actually did pretty okay. The last game was a little unfortunate.

“We could have probably won that game had we done smaller things better. I did have a chat with (MS) Dhoni after the match and he said it was a pretty good score on that sort of wicket. It was a bit slow, not a typical Bombay wicket that we played on earlier in the past two games,” he told reporters in Hyderabad ahead of Monday’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Mumbai Indians are currently languishing at the bottom of the table having won only two of the eight matches they have played so far. Saying that there is more consistency in the performance of the team, Singh hoped that tomorrow’s match would be a good one for his side.

“I think all the games are important. Not only for us, but all the teams. We don’t want to look at other teams. We got to look at ourselves and make sure that we play better cricket. I mean do the small things right. If we can do that, we feel that the obviously team is starting to get better. There is lot more consistency in terms of performances. Hopefully, this will be another good game,” he said.

Replying to a query, he said the Mumbai Indians are still hoping for a semifinal berth, as there is pressure on every team in the tournament. Obviously, that is one of thing that you play for. The pressure is on every team. It is not only us. Every other team has the same pressure as we do,” he said.

Asked if the start of the matches is where the team faltered, he said the beginning had been pretty decent though different openers had been tried.  “If you look at other teams around, barring Kings XI, I don’t think anybody has got more than 42, 44 consistently. Most of the teams have lost a wicket or two, which most teams are pretty happy with. I don’t think all the wickets have been very flat as people seem to think in T20. Most of the scores have been around 160 in the tournament.

“You got to understand that teams have got a bit stronger. Their bowling attacks have been better. T20 is a competition where people are looking to try different things. You cannot be stereo-typed as well,” he said. To another question, Singh said Praveen Kumar, who replaced the injured Zaheer Khan, is a valued player for the team.
