Sanju Samson showed his class when he played an aggressive innings against Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014. His half-century helped Rajasthan Royals to put on a score of 191 in 20 overs. According to him aggression comes to him naturally and in the match against Punjab he was at his best hitting four sixes. “I always try to dominate the bowlers and I am an aggressive batsman. Tonight, I felt like being aggressive while batting and was hungry for some runs and I got that. I always try to gauge my innings and play according to the situation. I play according to the field and according to the bowler I am facing. Tonight was no different.”

After his performances in First-Class cricket and last year’s Indian Premier League Sanju Samson was rightly retained by Rajasthan Royals. Under the mentorship of Rahul Dravid he has made steady progress. Unfortunately his performance was over-shadowed by David Miller and Glenn Maxwell who yet again stood out for Punjab.

“The wicket was supportive to the batsmen and the match was always alive even after getting 190-plus on the board.” Sanju Samson said, as he spoke to iplt20.com. “It was that kind of day for our opposition when everything went their way, and credit to them for the way they played,” added Samson.

The 19-year old is not agitated on being the losing side, but one feels bad for him after the performance and efforts he put in. “I have always loved to play for Rajasthan Royals and I am very happy that I contributed from my end to help the team get to a formidable total. But it hurts that we lost the match after playing so well,” he said.

The Kerala batsman had a lot of match practice in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) prior to the tournament as he played the Under-19 World Cup and the Asia Cup. “I played many matches here in the UAE in under-19 tournaments. I played the Asia Cup and World Cup here and knew the wickets well. That experience really helped me to be in good touch ahead of the IPL.”
