A lot has happened since the IPL match shifting issue came to light. According to the latest reports, the Mumbai Indians and the Rising Pune Supergiants franchises are ready to give Rs. 5 crore each towards the Chief Minister relief fund. This information was given by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to the Bombay High Court. The news comes after the Bombay High Court had asked BCCI whether it can shift matches out of Pune yesterday in view of the severe water crisis in the state of Maharashtra. BCCI had although that said it would procure treated sewage water for maintenance of pitches in the stadiums of Mumbai and Pune. During yesterday’s hearing BCCI counsel Rafiq Dada had informed the bench that the board had tied up with Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) for the same. Rafiq Dada had said – ” In this case, instead of discharging treated sewage water into the sea, we are using it in the stadiums,”. The PIL in the matter has been filed by Loksatta Movement and the counsel said that after the High court slammed the BCCI for careless wastage of water, the board had taken up the issue very seriously. Although, during the hearing in the matter on April 7, the court had declined to let the IPL opening match on April 9 in Mumbai take place here, but later the match was allowed to take place.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians franchise is owned by one of India’s biggest companies, Reliance Industries and managed by Nita Ambani. On the other hand, Rising Pune Supergiants is one of two new entrants into this season’s Indian Premier League (IPL) and is owned by Sanjiv Goenka. Both teams are from Maharashtra and therefore have decided to help the victims of the Maharashtra drought.
