Ishant Sharma beat David Warner’s outside off the very first ball of the match. With the seam pointing towards first-slip, Warner was beaten all ends up while defending it. Ishant bowled a similar delivery. This time the ball flew past the slip cordon. Ishant serious pace and bounce and also found movement, indicating that the pacers have something on offer. He conceded only 3 runs off his first over. However, that was the only respite for Kings XI. The opening duo of Warner and Dhawan launched an attack, scoring a half-century each.
Dhawan was the first purveyor of boundaries. He hit back-to-back fours off Anureet Singh to make amends for the first over. He then treated Ishant the same way, whipping a half-volley over backward square-leg.
Maxwell made the first bowling change, replacing Anureet with Mohit Sharma. That, though, did not change the course of the match. Warner and Dhawan smashed a four each. Then there was another bowling change, and the outcome was even more severe. Warner swatted a four and consecutive sixes off Akshar Patel. However, Akshar would have had the last laugh had Wriddhiman Saha held onto a thick edge off the final ball. Warner went on to score his sixth consecutive half-century against Kings XI and equalled the record of most half-centuries (35), catching up with Gautam Gambhir.
