Mumbai Indians (MI) exhibited a clinical bowling performance to limit the batting-heavy Gujarat Lions (GL) to 153 for 9 in match 35 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017. Batting at their home ground Saurashtra Cricket Stadium Association Stadium, the Lions never got roaring against the disciplined Mumbai side. Barring Ishan Kishan, none of the top-order batters could play an impactful innings and lay a solid foundation. Lasith Malinga and Krunal Pandya combined to take 5 for 47 to keep Lions under the pump. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: Gujarat Lions (GL) vs Mumbai Indians (MI), IPL 10, Match 35

The Lions lost the veteran Brendon McCullum for a mere 4. Lasith Malinga, who was injured for the past few games, knocked McCullum over with an absolute ripper. That brought Suresh Raina to the crease, with Ishan Kishan at the other end. However, the Lions’ captain was back to the den in the fifth over for 1. That was not it. Mumbai put them in further enigma. Malinga removed Aaron Finch for a duck. The Lions lost three crucial wickets within the batting Powerplay.

Kishan was still at the crease. Amidst the fall of wickets, he had already made his mark. He had collected 32 runs in boundaries — the best was the counterattack against Mitchell McClenaghan, against whom he smoked two sixes and as many fours. Nonetheless, there was a dip in the run-rate after the Powerplay. Krunal Pandya and Harbhajan Singh kept a lid on the runs. That, for apparent reasons, added pressure on the Lions. Krunal got the better of Dinesh Karthik for 2. Live cricket updates: GL vs MI, IPL 2017

In came Ravindra Jadeja at No. 6 to resurrect the innings with Kishan. Jadeja took only three deliveries to register his first six. He slog-swept a length ball over midwicket boundary. Kishan then hoiked another boundary, racing towards his maiden half-century. All the same, Harbhajan invited him to go for a glory shot. Kishan shimmied down to clear the rope, but found Kieron Pollard at long-off. He fell short by 2 runs to bag a well-deserved fifty. The Lions lost half their side for a mere 83 runs in 11.1 overs.

Later Krunal had Jadeja caught and bowled for 28. He then made Irfan Pathan, who played his first game in this edition, his third scalp. Situation looked even more bleak, but Andrew Tye played an entertaining knock of 25 off 12 with the help of 4 boundaries to take the Lions to 153 for 9.

While Malinga ended with 2 for 33, Harbhajan and Jasprit Bumrah took a wicket apiece.

Brief scores:

Gujarat Lions 153 for 9 in 20 overs (Ishan Kishan 48, Ravindra Jadeja 28; Krunal Pandya 3 for 14; Lasith Malinga 2 for 33) vs Mumbai Indians.
