Back in 2007, when Rohit Sharma first burst into the international scenes, he was amongst the finest fielders in the world. His run out of Justin Kemp in the inaugural ICC World T20, after all these years, is a YouTube favourite. Though Rohit is still a safe bet, especially while fielding at close-in positions in Tests, his athleticism have waned a bit over the years. In Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017, he may not have fired to his liking with the willow but has led well and grabbed some spectacular catches. Full Cricket Scorecard, Delhi Daredevils vs Mumbai Indians, IPL 2017, Match 45

On Saturday, in match 45, the Rohit-led Mumbai Indians (MI) trumped Delhi Daredevils (DD) by a record 146-run margin. This is now the highest margin victory in IPL history. DD were shot out for a paltry 66 and MI, with this victory, have now bagged 9 wins and 18 points to ensure a spot in the playoffs.

Rohit could score only 10 in the game but contributed with a splendid catch to send back Delhi’s overseas player Marlon Samuels for 1. Leg-spinner Karn Sharma managed to induce a thick outside edge. The ball was flying past Rohit, but the fielder plunged to his right and claimed a screamer.

Rohit credited MI fielding coach Jonty Rhodes for the improved fielding show.

“All credit goes to Jonty Rhodes, he has been working hard with the boys. I have been taking many catches. It is good to help the bowlers by taking those,” said Rohit during the post-match presentation ceremony.

Earlier this season, Rohit plucked stunners to send back Suresh Raina and AB de Villiers in different games. Rohit’s MI have been the most impressive team in this IPL. If Rohit leads MI to another IPL triumph, he will be the first captain in IPL to lift the trophy thrice. Not to forget he has also won the 2009 season with the now defunct Deccan Chargers.
