Chris Gayle needed only 3 runs to become the first player to score 10,000 runs in T20 cricket. However, with the wicket being dry, Virat Kohli dropped him and drafted in Shane Watson instead in match 17 between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) of Indian Premier League (IPL), at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. On the other hand, it was another Steven Smith-Virat Kohli encounter. But there were no sparks of rivalry between them, as Kohli’s men rather found it easy to contain the struggling RPS batting unit. RCB’s collective bowling effort made sure they keep RPS at bay, but Manoj Tiwary’s late blitz powered RPS to 161 for 8. Adam Milne, who replaced the ill Tymal Mills, started off with a 3-run over. Samuel Badree, from the other end, gave only 5 runs. All the same, Rahul Tripathi and Ajinkya Rahane seemed to have changed their mood. They went bonkers and bludgeoned 30 runs off the next 2 overs, forcing Kohli to make bowling changes in order to apply brakes. But that did not change anything. Rahane collected consecutive boundaries off Shane Watson. After the batting powerplay, Rahane and Tripathi churned out 26 and 28 runs respectively off 18 balls each. Above all, the rate at which the openers were blazing, the slowness of the pitch was forgotten.
Kohli brought Badree back into the attack, and the leg-spinner castled Rahane with a spectacular googly. Pawan Negi, in the next over, had Tripathi caught at cover, with Kohli taking a one-handed stunner.
That was it for RPS. The ball came slower onto the bat as it aged.
Dhoni was promoted ahead of Ben Stokes, at No. 4. He took only 4 dot balls to hit his first boundary. He then followed it up with a scythe past point. Along with the wicket, the runs dried up as well. Dhoni and Smith tried accumulating runs but had to work outrageously hard to put the ball to the boundary line. Amidst all this, Dhoni finally managed to put one into the orbit, way ahead of the roof. In the process, he completed 24,000 runs in representative cricket.
Just when RPS’ innings was being resurrected, Dhoni and Smith were dismissed off consecutive deliveries. RPS then lost three more wickets in no time. From 127 for 3, there were reduced to 130 for 7.
RPS still had Tiwary in the middle. With wickets tumbling, he had no option but to fire on all cylinders. He smashed 3 fours and 2 sixes to score 27 off 11 in death overs.
Brief score:
Rising Pune Supergiant 161 for 8 in 20 overs (Ajinkya Rahane 30, Rahul Tripathi 31, Manoj Tiwary 27; Adam Milne 2 for 27, Sreenath Aravind 2 for 29) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore.
