Chris Gayle slammed his record 21st T20 hundred on Thursday. In doing so, he registered his sixth hundred in IPL. He slammed 11 sixes (but only 1 four) and helped Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) to 193 for 3 in 20 overs, against a strong Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) bowling attack. Gayle was particularly severe on Rashid Khan, whom he belted for 2 consecutive sixes in his first over and later for 4 consecutive sixes in the 14th over of the innings.
Gayle hit his first hundred for KXIP on the eve of his daughter Krisallyna’s second birthday. Gayle was not picked in the first two rounds of the IPL 2018 auction. He was picked at his base price by KXIP. Then he was not picked for the first 2 matches. During an interview with Kevin Pietersen after his innings, Gayle hit out at his critics: “A lot of people thought that I am old. Nothing to prove though. Wherever I go across the globe, just want to earn some respect.
Dedicating the knock to his daughter, Gayle added: “This one is dedicated to my daughter Krisallyna, though. It’s her birthday tomorrow. So, yeah, this is for her. Tomorrow she will turn two and it’s her second time in India. We’re hoping to have a nice time. I am glad to score my century in just my second game at home, feels really good.”
Viru’s guidance: Imagine a dressing-room that has both Gayle and Virender Sehwag. On his work relationship with Sehwag, KXIP Team Director of Cricket, Gayle said, “Viru mentioned two good guys to me — the yoga guy and the massage guy, who help me stay flexible. Hopefully I’ll be able to touch my feet in a week’s time.
