During the IPL 2018 auction, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were intent on building a new team, leaving out former captain Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir returned to Delhi Daredevils (DD), his home franchise, after seven successful seasons. He also led KKR to their two maiden titles. At present KKR do not have an obvious choice for the role of a captain. When asked on the same topic during the Ice Cricket Tournament, KKR head coach Jacques Kallis mentioned Chris Lynn is in contention to take over the role. However, the KKR think-tank have not zeroed down on an option yet.

Lynn had led Australia A in a one-day competition against South Africa and India in 2016. Australia managed to win 1 out of 3 matches at that point.

Lynn had an excellent run in IPL 2017. He blasted 295 runs from 7 games at 50 and a strike rate of 181. A shoulder injury had kept him away from the remaining tournament. In the IPL 2018 auction, Lynn was the most expensive Australian cricketer bought for INR 9.6 crores.

Lynn seemed eager at the possibility. “I’d love to [lead]. I’d jump at the opportunity. We’ve got a really good group at Kolkata. The coaching staff, Simon Katich, Jacques Kallis, Heath Streak … I can relate (easily to) them. But there are a couple of boys that have been in the IPL for 10 years so you can’t ignore their experience, especially in their own backyard. I’m still learning the game over there but if given the nod then I’d jump at the chance,” Lynn told cricket.com.au.
