Kane Williamson has been named captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for IPL 2018. The franchise announced this from their official Twitter handle on Thursday. David Warner, who had led SRH to their title win in 2017, had first stepped down in the wake of recent ball-tampering controversy. Smith and Warner were handed a yearlong ban by Cricket Australia (CA) for being a part of the “leadership group” that encouraged Cameron Bancroft’s ball-tampering act during the Cape Town Test last week. After CA’s ban, BCCI Acting President CK Khanna, IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla and the BCCI Acting Hon. secretary Amitabh Choudhary decided to ban both Warner and Smith from IPL 2018.

“I’ve accepted the role to stand in as captain for this season. It’s an exciting opportunity with a talented group of players. I look forward to the challenges ahead,” Williamson, who is currently in New Zealand for the Test series against England, was quoted by SRH. Earlier this week, Rajasthan Royals (RR) had replaced Smith with Ajinkya Rahane as captain.

Williamson made his IPL debut in 2015 for Sunrisers. He has played 15 IPL matches, scoring 411 runs at 31.61 and a strike rate of 129. He has 3 IPL fifties with a highest score of 89.
