In Match 52 of VIVO IPL 2018, Delhi Daredevils (DD) fought hard to salvage some pride in a ‘dead rubber’ against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Feroz Shah Kotla, New Delhi. DD earned their fourth win of the season, a performance far from impressive — though that has not prevented Kiran Grandhi from smiling. Nonetheless, this victory will pull themselves up to spoil Mumbai Indians’ (MI) campaign in a must-win clash for the latter on Sunday.

Chasing 163, Ambati Rayudu and Shane Watson were slow to start off, scoring only 22 off the first 5 overs. Then they counterattacked, taking 22 off the sixth, bowled by Avesh Khan. Rayudu took the momentum from there before. He lost Watson, who had found it tough to get going before trying to take on Amit Mishra. Mishra invited him for a big shot, and Trent Boult took the catch at short fine leg.

Suresh Raina also struggled on the sluggish Kotla pitch. He fell to Nepali whizkid Sandeep Lamichhane. Raina went for a slog and departed for an 18-ball 15. Rayudu was timing well as he has done right through the course of the tournament. Unfortunately, he holed out to Glenn Maxwell in the deep. Rayudu fell after completing 3,000 IPL runs.

CSK were never given a freeway by Mishra, who finished with 4-0-20-2. Lamichhane, playing only his second game, complemented the senior wrist-spinner to return with 4-0-21-1. These 8 overs put a stranglehold on the CSK batsmen, something they never recovered from. They fell 34 short in the end — a massive margin by T20 standards.

MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja’s presence till the 18th over meant little as the equation read 50 off 12 balls. DD’s spirited victory only demonstrated what they could have done in the tournament. Poor selection and inability to create opportunities into victories cost them on several occasions.

CSK now move to their adopted home turf, Pune, to host Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on Sunday. They will hope for a polished show ahead of the Playoffs. A defeat may ruin CSK’s chances of finishing at the top two, though they may make it despite that.

Fasten your seat belts. The last weekend of the group stages have some spectacular ties remaining.
