Indian Premier League (IPL) news have started making the rounds well before schedule. Mumbai Indians (MI) had claimed a record-breaking third title while teams like Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Delhi Daredevils (DD) and likes were out of sight well before the knockouts. However, DD are set to begin their next season on a fresh note with change of guard. As per reports on Indian Express, Jason Gillespie is in talks with the franchise to become the next head coach. Gillespie has already ended his tenure with Yorkshire and currently coaching BBL’s Adelaide Strikers. With Rahul Dravid opting to coach the India A and U-19 side, DD are presently without a coach.
Enlightening more on Gillespie’s role, a DD official agreed on the talks with former Australian but denied any sort of confirmation, “He brings a lot to the table. He has vast experience behind him. He has shown keenness to be a part of Delhi team and talks are still on.” It is also learnt that Gillespie is interested in the role himself. This is not the first time Gillespie would be associated with IPL. He has been earlier roped in as the bowling coach for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). Gillespie has had a very successful stint as a coach earlier. He took Yorkshire to two County Championship titles in 2014 and 2015. He is also known to assists Yorkshire players like Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and David Willey who are mainstay players for England today. Gillespie also considered applying for Team India head coach position which is now bagged by Ravi Shastri.
Gillespie this year was the interim coach of Kent and Papua New Guinea (PNG). He was also named the bowling coach of Australia A team which was to tour South Africa.
Meanwhile, pacer Zaheer Khan who led DD in the last edition has expressed to be part of the franchise once again.
