The eight-Test old Jason Holder is all set to take the reins of captaincy of the West Indian Test side from Denesh Ramdin ahead of their Test tour of Sri Lanka. Holder, aged 23, was elevated to position of One-Day International (ODI) skipper just months ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 held earlier this year and is set to skipper West Indies in the longest format too. West Indies are a team perennially under-achieving and the management believe Holder is the man to lead West Indies out of their miserable performances in the Test format. Ramdin captained West Indies in 13 Tests off which he tasted success in just four games, losing seven while managing draws in the remaining two. Ramdin retains his place in the squad for Sri Lanka but the selection committee felt the need for a shift in captaincy. The expectations will be high on Holder, but the youngster seemed to enjoy the challenges presented by captaincy in the ODI format. Clive Lloyd, the chief West Indies selector, expressed the view that Holder’s elevation to Test captaincy was with an eye on the future. “He is a young man that all of the selectors, people in the Caribbean and worldwide believe has several of the qualities that can take our team forward,” said Lloyd to windiescricket.com. “We felt the time was right for a change and we feel he will do as well as he did when he was elevated to the position of One-day International captain ahead of the World Cup,” Lloyd explained. “We had a number of detractors when he was appointed ODI captain, but he showed during the ODI series in South Africa and the World Cup that he had the qualities that were needed to take our team forward,” Lloyd added.
