Joe Root continued to dominate in the post-lunch session as England powered they way across the 500-run mark against Pakistan on Day Two of second Test at Old Trafford. Root who remained not-out on 185 at lunch, looked effortless enroute his second Test double ton. Root’s previous best was 200* against Sri Lanka at Lord’s in 2014. Root got to his second double in just 355 balls. Root (226*) has been ably supported by Jonny Bairstow (32*) as England take tea at 533 for 6 on Day Two at Old Trafford. LIVE CRICKET SCORECARD: Pakistan vs England, 2nd Test at Old Trafford
Root with this became just the sixth batsman in 132 years to score a Test double century at Old Trafford. He was just the second England cricketer to do so after Ken Barrington in 1964 and the first player from any country since South Africa’s Gary Kirsten in 1998. The only bright spot for Pakistan in this session was when Wahab Riaz picked up the wicket of Ben Stokes.
Stokes who looked dangerous in his 51-ball stay, gloved a simple catch to Sarfraz Ahmed behind the stumps for 34. Since Stokes departure Bairstow provided proper foil to Root. Bairstow in his stay played with much grit and composure. Misbah-ul-Haq and his men looked a bit tired at the very end of the session. Misbah even resorted to Shan Masood to pick up wickets as Root and Bairstow kept on piling easy runs without much fuzz.
Brief scores:
England 533 for 6 (Alastair Cook 105, Joe Root 225*; Mohammad Aamer 2 for 89 ) vs Pakistan
