With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 moving to the familiar arena of Sharjah, Royal Challengers Bangalore restricted Delhi Daredevils to 145 for four in 20 overs. The Bangalore bowlers dented Delhi early and kept the pressure through the innings. It then required a gritty partnership from JP Duminy and Ross Taylor to take Delhi to their eventual score.
Sharjah has had this reputation of being a batsman’s paradise, but Delhi struggled from the outset. Mitchell Starc bowled a good spell upfront as he worked pace and was getting some bounce. Even Albie Morkel was keeping it very tight by maintaining the right channels outside the off-stump. The only highlight early in the innings was when Murali Vijay flicked one over mid-wicket for six.
Mayank Agarwal was the first to go as he tried to pull a short ball from Starc and got a top-edge, which was taken by Virat Kohli. Dinesh Karthik was then dismissed first ball when he poked at one outside the off-stump from Albie Morkel. Varun Aaron then bowled a wicket maiden as Manoj Tiwary tickled one to Parthiv Patel down the leg-side. In the powerplay, Delhi had only scored 30 for the loss of three.
Yuzvendra Chahal then came on and bowled a splendid spell. The leg-spinner tossed the first one up and held Vijay at the crease. The ball turned and disturbed the woodwork. At 35 for four in the eighth over, things looked bleak for Delhi. Chahal continued to bowl a good spell, fearlessly giving it air and asking the batsmen questions. Taylor and found it difficult to tackle him and the young spinner finished his four overs for only 18 with one wicket.
It was quite interesting that Kohli had saved Ashok Dinda for the death. The new ball bowlers had done their job and the spinners too had done well. In the slog-overs, Dinda ran into a Duminy who was looking to attack. In the 18th over, Duminy got to his fifty off 44 balls after smashing Dinda for a four and a six. Both Starc and Dinida did bear the brunt towards the end as the batsmen attacked anything and everything. Starc ultimately finished with figures of one for 33 in his four overs, which were spoilt by an expensive last over. Dinda finished with none for 51. Kohli had Aaron, who had bowled three and conceded only nine runs for one wicket.
Towards the end, Duminy unleashed the big shots and in the last three overs, Delhi managed 44. Duminy finished with 67.
Nevertheless, the initial burst had helped Bangalore keep Delhi under control and they now have to bat sensibly to get the total.
Brief scores:
Delhi Daredevils 145 for 4 in 20 overs(JP Duminy 67*, Ross Taylor 43*; Varun Aaron 1 for 9, Yuzvendra Chahal 1 for 18) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore.
