New Zealandhave reached a total of 70 for the loss of 2 against Bangladesh at the end of the first session of Day Two of the second Test at Christchurch. It is visitors pacer Kamrul Islam who rocked the hosts with back-to-back wickets of Jeet Raval and skipper Kane Williamson to put the match in equilibrium at the stroke of lunch on Day Two. Kiwi opener Tom Latham has been the positive point for hosts as he survived some stringent bowling spells from the visitors and is unbeaten on 38 along with Ross Taylor at the other end on 10. Tamim Iqbal, the stand-in Bangladesh skipper deployed spin and seam from both ends as New Zealand began with their batting on Day Two.
Hasan saw opener Jeet Raval’s catch being dropped off his bowling on the 2nd ball of his second over in the slip cordon. On the other end, Taskin too was bowling some great out swinging deliveries which both Raval and Latham play cautiously. Amidst all this, Raval survived the second time when the Bangladesh fielders missed out on an easy run-out opportunity as there was a terrible mix-up between both openers. Raval survived yet again the very next ball from Taskin as he was edged the ball and Sabbir Rahman just made a mess of a regulation slip catch.
But Raval (16) was finally removed by Kamrul Islam in his very first over when he tried dragging a short delivery but dragged the ball onto the stumps. When New Zealand had scored 45 runs when lost their first wicket and in came their skipper and man-in-form Kane Williamson. Williamson got off the mark on his very first ball showing signs of full confidence. But Rabbi struck again in a matter of just a single delivery as he bowled an out-swinging delivery which Williamson (2) had already committed to and edged the ball to Nurul Hasan who took it neatly.
Since then, Latham and Taylor have tried resurrecting the fallen innings. Bangladesh missed a trick by not starting with pace from both the ends. By the time Tamim realised that the ball was doing enough for the pacers, the openers, particularly Latham, had got his eyes in. The pacers did break in soon but New Zealand had seen off the tricky period.
The first hour of the second session will be very important for both teams as a wicket here will put the visitors on top, but if both these batsmen play their time out, this will add pressure on Bangladesh.
Brief scores:
New Zealand 70 for 2 (Tom Latham 38*, Jeet Raval 16, Ross Taylor 10*; Kamrul Islam Rabbi 2 for 18) trail Bangladesh 289 (Soumya Sarkar 86, Shakib Al Hasan 59; Tim Southee 5 for 94) by 219 runs
