Kolkata Knight Riders put in a disciplined bowling performance to limit the Sunrisers Hyderabad to 142 for eight in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.
There was a surprise in store ahead of the game as VVS Laxman announced that Darren Sammy had taken over as Hyderabad captain with Shikhar Dhawan continuing only in the capacity of a batsman. Sammy came in for Moises Henriques and chose to bat first after winning the toss. Kolkata were unchanged coming into this game.
The Hyderabad had its moments as they dominated in phases, but kept losing wickets, which hit them back. While Dhawan started well, stroking four boundaries in his 19, Aaron Finch fell early when he edged one to third man off Umesh Yadav. The powerplay was coming along well but Sunil Narine was brought in for the sixth over and Dhawan fell while sweeping one as he skied it high in the air.
David Warner and Naman Ojha then got going and started smashing it around. Ojha had a lucky break when Robin Uthappa missed a stumping off Shakib Al Hasan. To add to Kolkata’s woes, Ojha smashed two sixes in the space of the next few two overs. However, Shakib returned to dismiss him after he was hit for six as Ojha smashed one to point.
At the half-way mark, Hyderabad were 84 for three and were going along well with Warner hitting it well. But, then KL Rahul fell in quick succession. Warner had hit a few good ones and raced to 34 off 17 before smashing one straight to mid-wicket off Umesh. At 104 for five in the 14th over, things looked bleak for Hyderabad.
Sammy walked in and struggled to middle the ball. The time on the bench had quite clearly affected him as he played numerous dot balls. Irfan Pathan warmed up and took on Piyush Chawla in the 17th over. Sammy’s struggle of 16 balls for seven came to an end in the penultimate over when he holed out to the deep.
The spinners did their job for Kolkata again as they have done right through the tournament. Shakib recorded figures of two for 22, Piyush Chawla went for one for 24 and Narine recorded one for 21. Thus, in their 11 overs, they conceded only 67 runs. Plus, consider the 26 runs conceded by Umesh Yadav in his four overs and also took three wickets. Hyderabad scored only 93 runs in 15 overs bowled by Yadav and the spinners. That does tell the tale.
Sunrisers Hyderabad 142 for 8 in 20 overs (David Warner 34; Umesh Yadav 3 for 26, Shakib Al Hasan 2 for 22) vs Kolkata Knight Riders.
