Galle: Mar 8, 2013
Sri Lankan left hand batsman Kumar Sangakkara achieved a unique feat on Friday as he went past Sunil Gavaskar’s 10,122 runs to become the tenth highest scorer in Test cricket.
Sangakkara achieved this feat while playing against Bangladesh during the first Test at Galle.
According to statistician Mohandas Menon, Gavaskar held the record of staying in the top ten run scorer’s list for 33 years and 50 days since he broke into the list during his innings of 166 against Pakistan on 17th January 1980.
Mahela Jayawardene is the only other Sri Lankan in this list having scored 10,806 runs in his Test career so far. The two Sri Lankans are separated by Shivnarine Chanderpaul at the ninth spot with 10,696 runs. Since all three of them are still active cricketers, the bottom half of the list can be expected to shuffle.
