Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara who is currently in Miami, took to Twitter to congratulate Sri Lanka’s new batting sensation Kusal Mendis. Mendis who is playing only his seventh Test for the Lankas’s scored his first ever Test ton to his team in a strong position against Australia in the first of the two-Test series on Day Three at Pallekele. Kusal remained not-out on stumps after bad-lights and rain meant play was stopped early. Kusal is unbeaten on a 243-ball 169, which included 20 four’s and 1 six. Sangakkara in his Tweet lauded the young-lad for his character and ability against the likes of Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Marsh and Nathan Lyon. Kusal was also applauded by Dinesh Chandimal, Mahela Jayawardene, Angelo Mathews soon after Sangakkara’s tweet. Rain and bad light brought an early end to the third day of the first Test between Sri Lanka and Australia at Pallekele Thursday after an unbeaten century from Kusal Mendis brought the hosts back into contention. Sri Lanka were 282 for six at close, leading by 196 runs in their second innings. Mendis, who notched up his maiden Test ton, was unbeaten on 169.
Nathan Lyon, who became Australia’s first off-spinner to bag 200 wickets in Tests, and Mitchell Starc took two wickets apiece during the Sri Lankan innings in a match which looks evenly poised.
What a knock by the youngster @KusalMendis1 character and ability. Sri Lanka poised to win this now. What an innings. Outstanding
Rain brought a premature end to proceedings for the third consecutive afternoon with the game expected to begin early on the fourth day to make up for lost time.
