Kumar Sangakkara’s fifty takes Dhaka Dynamites to 158 for 7 in match 42 of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2016 at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka. Dhaka Dynamites got off to an excellent start. They put up 55 in the powerplay, without losing a single wicket. Opener Mehedi Maruf was on fire, scoring three boundaries off Shaiful Islam’s first over. His partner Sangakkara too chipped in with a few boundaries. They were watchful in the first couple of overs, but once they got their eye in, they did not hold back. Khulna Titans picked up their first wicket in the seventh over, when Maruf was run out for run-a-ball 16. Sangakkara, however, did not let go off his grip and scored his fifty as well in quick time. He was however dismissed by Benny Howell for 59, but ensured that his side was comfortably placed at 87 for 2 in the 12th over. The stage was set for Nasir Hossain and skipper Shakib-Al-Hasan to take their side to a good score. They started well, dispatching Mosharraf Hossain for a couple of boundaries in the 13th over. Hossain, after getting off to a good start, was run out by Mahmudullah for 19. Junaid Khan returned to get the wicket of Shakib for 11, holing out at deep mid-wicket. Seekkuge Prasanna, too, was dismissed in the same over, getting trapped in front by Junaid for 14. It was upto Ravi Bopara and Mosaddek Hossain to end the innings on a high.

Dynamites were 123 for 5 at the end of the 16th over, and were eyeing a score of about 160 from there. Bopara’s wicket for 6 in the penultimate over certainly did not help their cause. Mosaddek played a good hand, but was bowled by Shafiul in the final over of the innings. The Dynamites unfortunately fell just short of 160. Junaid was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with three wickets to his credit.

Dhaka Dynamites are on top of the table, and have already booked their place in the next round of the competition. However, Khulna Titans have to win this match to stay alive in the competition. If they win, they are guaranteed at least the third position, which is good enough for them to make it to make it to the Eliminator.

Brief scores:

Dhaka Dynamites: 158 for 7 in 20 overs (Kumar Sangakkara 59, Mosaddek Hossain 20; Junaid Khan 3 for 22, Benny Howell 1 for 14) vs Khulna Titans
