Till February 27 2010, world cricket had witnessed not even a single ODI double-hundred. The tides were turning since the advent of T20s as batsmen started to adjust their game accordingly. The first ODI double century was hit by Sachin Tendulkar, perhaps the greatest ODI batsman that ever was. The feat was bettered by his protégé Virender Sehwag. Nonetheless, Rohit Sharma has gone way ahead of every cricketer, and slammed three double-hundreds in the format. He also became the second skipper to notch double centuries. He leads the overall list of double-century makers, one that includes only two non-Indians — Martin Guptill and Chris Gayle.

Player Runs SR Opposition Ground Start Date
Rohit Sharma 264 153 India Sri Lanka Kolkata November 13, 2014
Martin Guptill 237* 145 New Zealand West Indies Wellington March 21, 2015
Virender Sehwag 219 147 India West Indies Indore December 8, 2011
Chris Gayle 215 146 West Indies Zimbabwe Canberra February 24, 2015
Rohit Sharma 209 132 India Australia Bengaluru November 2, 2013
Rohit Sharma 208* 136 India Sri Lanka Mohali December 13, 2017
Sachin Tendulkar 200* 136 India South Africa Gwalior February 24, 2010

Guptill and Gayle’s double-hundreds came in the 2015 World Cup, against West Indies and Zimbabwe respectively. Talking about Rohit, he averaged 12.92 in 2012, but hasn’t averaged below 45 since his maiden double-hundred. His first came against Australia in the final of a seven-match series at home (2013). He slammed the second against Sri Lanka in what was his comeback match at Eden Gardens, Kolkata (the penultimate match of the 5 ODIs).

Rohit achieved his third double century in the ongoing second ODI against Sri Lanka at Mohali. He reached three figures in 115 balls, and had only 2 sixes till then. He went berserk and ended the innings with 12 sixes (overall). We hope he brings up his fourth double ton when India would be touring in the near future.
