South Africa won the toss and put England to bat. Captain Eoin Morgan led his side to a massive total of 339 for 6 with the help of his 107 off 93 in the first ODI. Earlier, the team had lost their first wicket in the second over as Jason Roy departed for 1. Alex Hales paired up with Joe Root to bring up 100 for England. He later went on to score his half-century and got out for 67. Another impressive knock came from Moeen Ali at No. 7, who scored a 51-ball 77. Chris Morris and Andile Phehlukwayo were the two most successful bowlers with a couple of wickets each.
South Africa lost their first wicket early too, removing Quinton de Kock for 5. Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis provided the team stability, scoring individual half-centuries and brought up 100 for South Africa. Another crucial contribution of 45 runs came from AB de Villiers but the efforts could not save the side from the defeat. Chris Woakes was the pick of the bowlers with a 4-for, Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali got a couple of wickets each to bundle South Africa for 267 in 45 overs, handing England 72 runs.
