R Vinay Kumar gave the first success to Indians as he got rid of Ricky Ponting who opened the batting for Australia on Sunday.
Earlier India were asked to bowl first at Adelaide as Australian captain Michael Clarke won the toss and elected to bat first on batting-friendly track.
With a win against the winless Sri Lankans, India are second in the points table. The unbeaten Australians are top of the heap after two successive wins.
Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar has been rested in the fourth ODI as Gautam Gambhir gets an opportunity to open the innings with Virender Sehwag.
Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin gets an opportunity to play the fourth ODI ahead of lanky spinner Rahul Sharma who cooled his heels in Perth while Ashwin grabbed his chances with both hands and was man of the match for his 3 for 32 and unbeaten 30 runs with the bat.
