India reached 90 for two at lunch, after Gautam Gambhir slammed half-century on the opening day of the third Test against England at Kolkata.
Gambhir, who has been under stark criticism following a string of poor performances had hit back at the critics saying he and Sehwag were still the best opening pair India had. Irrespective how that comment was taken, this knock will surely go a long way to keep his detractors out of the picture for a while.
Gambhir’s 50 had as many as 10 boundaries as he looked in top form from the start of the session. On a pitch that had a something for the fast bowlers, Gambhir wasn’t troubled by the England bowlers James Anderson and comeback man Steven Finn.
India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat against England in the third cricket Test at the Eden Gardens.
For India, Pacer Ishant Sharma made a comeback into the side after more than 10 months replacing off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who is recovering from a bout of flu.
England made two changes to their line-up with batsman Ian BeLl and fast bowler Steven Finn replacing Jonny Bairstow and Stuart Board.
After losing the first Test in Ahmedabad, England bounced back to level the four-match series 1-1 with a 10-wicket win in Mumbai.
Brief Scores: India 90 for 2 (Gautam Gambhir 50; Monty Panesar 1 for 32) vs England
