Mumbai Indians (MI) clash with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 at Abu Dhabi on April 16. Mumbai are the defending champions and Kolkata won the IPL in 2012. Rohit Sharma leads MI while Gautam Gambhir is the captain of KKR.
The IPL has headed to the Middle East for the first time. The last time the IPL was held outside India was back in 2009 when South Africa hosted the T20 tournament. The Indian General Elections is the main reason the IPL will be held outside the country. But this is only till April 30 after which the IPL heads back to India till June 1.
Both Mumbai and Kolkata made interesting choices during the IPL retention and auction earlier this year. There is no home advantage in the Middle East. But the pitches are considered to be not too dissimilar from the ones in India. Either way, both MI and KKR will be looking to get off on a winning start.
