Live Cricket Score, Irani Cup 2016-17, Gujarat vs Rest of India, Day 3: GUJ build lead of 359 at stumps

Parthiv Patel-led Gujarat will face Cheteshwar Pujara’s men in the Irani Cup clash at the CCI, Brabourne, in Mumbai.

16 Good Morning, शुभ प्रभात! Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live cricket blog session of Day Three of the Irani Cup 2016-17 being played between the newly-crowned Ranji Trophy champions Gujarat and the Rest of India (ROI) squad. In its 55th year, the tournament is set to witness a team for the first time, as Gujarat, first-timers, take on the ROI. After bundling out Gujarat for 358, Cheteshwar Pujara was the lone survivor scoring 86 for ROI on Day Two. He built the only crucial partnership of 68 runs with opening batsman Akhil Herwadkar. However, Gujarat bowlers Chintan Gaja, Hardik Patel and Mohit Thadani ruled the final session to bring ROI down to 206 for 9.

The not out batsmen at close were number  10 and  11, Pankaj Singh (7) and Mohammed Siraj (8) and Gujarat were well-poised to take a handy first innings lead on the morrow at the Brabourne Stadium. Pujara, who came in to bat after the early fall of opener Abhinav Mukund for 8 off the last ball of the 9th over bowled by Gaja, kept the innings together while the other batsmen fell around him. The Saurashtra batsman was seventh out after hitting nine fours during his 156-ball stay.

In fact, three wickets fell at the same score of 191 with Kuldeep Singh and Shahbaz Nadeem being the others to be dismissed before and after Pujara, as  ROI slumped from 166 for  3to 192 for 9 in 16 overs, and lost their last four wickets for the addition of one run in a sensational collapse.

The only other batsman to impress for ROI apart from Pujara was Mumbai opener Herwadkar, who made 48 with one six and  7 fours in 124 minutes before he got caught in the leg-side trap placed by left-arm spinner Hardik Patel, who grabbed 3 for 73. In the morning, Gujarat added 58 runs to their overnight 300 for 8 in 75 minutes’ batting before their first innings came to an end.
