Hello and Welcome to CricketCountry’s live cricket blog and updates’ post for the Day One of the third and final Test between Australia and Pakistan. With a win at Melbourne, Australia have now taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. Pakistan have shown promises in patches but their ability to implode has seen them lose games in a session. With the traditional New Year’s Test starting at Sydney, Australia’s aim will be to inflict a whitewash, something they have been meted frequently in 2016 across formats. Pakistan, on the other hand, have plenty of pride to play for. This is Pramod Ananth and I will be bringing you the live cricket scores and updates of the final Test of this Australian summer.

Australia will look forward to start 2017 on a positive note while Pakistan, who have been only consistent in Test cricket and enjoyed a brief stint as No.1 in this format, will try to replicate their show in England in mid last year. With the SCG track expected to assist spin bowlers, Pakistan may play Mohammad Asghar as their second spinner meanwhile, left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe is set to partner Nathan Lyon. To Pakistan’s relief Misbah-ul-Haq will play the Test.

The Test will also mark Australian captain Steven Smith’s 50th appearance in this format. Already the No. 1 Test batsman, Smith finished with over 1,000 Test runs in 2016, and will look forward to rely on his rich form in 2017.

Western Australian all-rounder Hilton Cartwright will make his Test debut and in doing so, he will be the 450th Test cricket to play for Australia. The hosts’ strength has been their pace duo of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. While Starc has been ruthless with pace and reverse swing, Hazlewood’s discipline has impressed the fraternity. However, for a change this Test might just be the one where the spinners have the final say.

Australia (Playing XI): Steven Smith (c), David Warner, Matthew Renshaw, Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb, Hilton Cartwright, Matthew Wade (wk), Mitchell Starc, Steve O’Keefe, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon.

Pakistan: Misbah-ul-Haq (c), Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali, Babar Azam, Imran Khan, Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Rahat Ali, Sami Aslam, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), Sharjeel Khan, Sohail Khan, Wahab Riaz, Yasir Shah, Younis Khan.
