New Zealand will take on Australia in the first Test of the two-match series at Wellington’s boutique Basin Reserve stadium. The series has an added sense of occasion given that it is the last time Brendon McCullum will appear in New Zealand colours. McCullum has grown to be one of the most respected personalities in New Zealand and it is no surprise that first three days of the Test at Basin Reserve — the sight of his and New Zealand’s only triple hundred — are sold out. New Zealand will look to make it special for McCullum. Australia will look to spoil it. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: New Zealand vs Australia 2015-16, 1st Test at Wellington
Steven Smith’s Australia had a tough time in the preceding Chappell-Hadlee series where they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat after being in a commanding position in the final game. New Zealand’s conditions promise to ask the Australians some difficult questions and they have a disadvantage to that end.
The pitch at Basin Reserve was pictured to have a fair covering of grass and batting first may not be the best idea on this surface. McCullum had even earlier said that he would look to bowl first if he won the toss. Both teams have some very talented players but given that New Zealand’s lot have shown far more aptitude to deal with swing, they have the competitive edge. But, as always, it would be preposterous to rule Australia out.
