Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene and former opener Sanath Jayasuriya extended their support for Sachithra Senanayeke, who was recently banned from international cricket for suspect bowling action. The icons took to their Twitter accounts to back the off-spinner, whose action was reported during Sri Lanka‘s tour of England.
Jayawardene was quoted on the microblogging site as saying,”We all are behind Sachi as a team. He will go through the protocol which #ICC has recommended . I am sure he will be ok.” He was joined by the retired southpaw who echoed his sentiments.
We all are with Sachithra on this case. As a nation we all are with him. I am sure he will follow which #ICC has recommended. He will be ok.
Senanayake was reported for violating the 15 degree elbow extension threshold that is followed in international cricket today. Though the verdict arrived after the third ODI between Sri Lanka and South Africa, the issue was first reported by the umpires and officials during the fourth one-day international (ODI) between England and Sri Lanka at Lords on May 31st.
The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) authorities have decided to send the off-spinner for extensive coaching following the ban. Senanayake, who made his international debut against South Africa in January, 2012, has played 37 ODIs, 17 T20s and one test for Sri Lanka, taking 40 ODI and 17 T20 wickets.
