Mahela Jayawardene posted his 50th Test half-century in his final innings in the Test format against Pakistan at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on Saturday. Mahela reached the milestone when he swept Saeed Ajmal for a boundary in the 128th delivery he faced. Jayawardene also became the third player to complete 1000 runs in this calender year, the other two being fellow countrymen Kumar Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews.

Jayawardene is now tied with Sangakkara with fifty half-centuries each at the seventh position in the list of players with most half-centuries in Tests and eighth in the list of highest 50-plus scores. Jayawardene is also featured in the list of highest number of centuries with 34 tons. The legendary batsman will now target one last three-digit score in order to bow out of the longest format of the game on a high.
