Mahela Jayawardene on Saturday created history as he surpassed former Pakistan captain Inzamam-Ul-Haq in the list of the highest run-scorers in the history of One-Day International (ODI) cricket. Jayawardene achieved the feat during the first ODI between Sri Lanka and Pakistan at Hambantota.
Jayawardene has now scored 11,742 runs in as many as 421 ODIs and is the fifth highest run-getter in ODIs. Jayawardene, who recently retired from Test cricket, also smashed his 73rd half-century during the clash against Pakistan. Inzamam had garnered 11,739 runs in the 50-over format with 10 centuries and 83 half-centuries.
Jayawardene was involved in a strong 116-run stand for the fifth wicket with Angloe Mathews, as the two Sri Lankans revived their innings after the top-order flopped against Pakistan. Jayawardene faced 66 balls to score 63 runs with the help of eight hits to the fence.
