Manoj Prabhakar criticises Indian fast bowlers

Kochi:  Jan 14, 2013

Former Indian cricketer Manoj Prabhakar feels the current crop of Indian fast bowlers are not having a workable plan for bowling in the death overs.

He was quoted by the Times of India as saying, “Bowling at the death is a special skill. You need to mix it up by bowling yorkers and slower ones. The current crop of bowlers lack experience and apart from Bhuvneshwar (Kumar), the others don’t have the necessary skill to bowl accurate yorkers.”

Prabhakar criticised India’s senior most bowler Ishant Sharma for not showing the way to the youngsters.

“Ishant Sharma is the most experienced amongst the current crop of bowlers, but he is hardly showing youngsters the way. He bowls length balls in the end overs which is just not acceptable,” he said.

The new ODI rules have added headache to the fast bowlers as only a maximum of four fielders are allowed outside the inner circle. But the two bouncers per over is a welcome change for bowlers. While the Pakistan‘s fast bowlers in the recently-concluded limited overs series took to the new rule like fish to water, the Indian pacers have struggled to cope with the changes.

Prabhakar feels the pace of the Indian fast bowlers is not helpful in bowling bouncers.

He said, “At the moment we are not even using one, where will we bowl two. Bouncers can only be effective if you bowl it at good pace. The Indian fast bowlers today are bowling at 130 to 140kmph. If you bowl bouncers at that pace, batsmen will whack you over the ropes.”
