England have beaten Pakistan by 44 runs (Duckworth-Lewis Method) in the first One-Day International (ODI) at Southampton. Rain stopped play after the 34th over and England, who 194 for 3 at that stage were well ahead of Pakistan according to the D/L method. England through this win have taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Jason Roy and Joe root scored fifties to ensure that England were comfortably placed. Roy went after the bowlers right from the beginning and was then joined by Root after Alex Hales was dismissed early by Umar Gul. Pakistan were sloppy in the field and dropped a catch or two and have only themselves to blame for this loss. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: Pakistan vs England, 1st ODI at Southampton
The 89-run stand between Roy and Root set things up beautifully for England to win this match. Roy brought up his fifty in no time but played one shot too many and holed out at long off 56-ball 65. Root and skipper Eoin Morgan then looked to knock the ball around, but Root was unfortunately run out for a well made 61 courtesy of a Azhar Ali direct hit. That could have been Pakistan’s opening, but Stokes along with Morgan played sensibly from there on, knowing very well that they are ahead of the D/L par score. Rains were expected in the day and it seems like England had things well worked out. Pakistan vs England, 1st ODI Full Updates
