Melbourne: Former Australian great Greg Chappell has described David Warner as one of the finest ‘match-winners’ that the country has ever produced as the swashbuckling opener prepares for his 50th Test to be played against New Zealand. Reflecting on Warner’s extraordinary rise, the 67-year-old said that the southpaw always wanted to be a good hitter as well as a good batsman. Chappell opined that Warner always had talent to reach a certain point in his cricketing career but added that it was his discipline that had propelled him into the stratosphere of the all-time greats, News.com.au reported. Describing Warner as `fearless`, Chappell said that the opener had always played Test cricket in his own way. Chappell maintained that Warne had an inordinate amount of talent, adding that he was ready to dedicate himself fully for his country.

Warner also boasts of having a best average among his countrymen who have played against New Zealand. He has an average of 93.12 in his last five matches of the trans-Tasman contest.

Chappell believes that Warner had learned a lot since his arrival in the international cricket, highlighting the explosive batsman’s ability to judge every single ball he faces.

Australia, which suffered a 1-2 defeat in the three-match ODI series, will now aim to bounce back when they take on New Zealand in the two-match Test series, starting at Basin Reserve in Wellington from Friday.
