Unlike previous seasons of Indian Premier League (IPL), the 2017 edition of the tournament did not see that much runs being scored with the bat as it did in 2016. The last season was all about Virat Kohli, David Warner and their masterful batting, but this edition was more about surprises from the willow. True, that there was nothing much to be surprised about when one sees the list of leading run-scorers for IPL 10. But if we take a different angle, one will surely get amused with some new and unexpected names making it to the list of top run-getters.

The biggest surprise with the bat in IPL 10 was Sunil Narine, who till now was majorly known for his mystery bowling. However, every T20 franchise he represents across the globe will now be looking to use him as an opening batsman. Fans were surprised when the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Gautam Gambhir made this bold move of promoting Narine to the opening slot. The West Indian left everyone pleasantly surprised by delivering with the bat and exceeding expectations.

Narine not only scored runs, but also provided a perfect blistering start every time he came out to bat. Who would have thought that a mystery spinner will score the fastest fifty of the season, which was also the joint-fastest in the tournament’s history. Narine’s batting average of 17.23 might give a poor impression but his strike-rate of 172.30 was amongst the top batters of the season.

After Narine, another surprising part was Hashim Amla, who has mostly been seen as a long format batsman but in this IPL, the South African cricketer proved everyone wrong with his classical style of batting. Without playing any innovative shots, Amla averaged best amongst all the batsman in this season. It was not the amount of runs he scored but it was all about the way he batted and it made many fans and expert fell in love with his batting all over again.

Chris Lynn, Rishabh Pant and Rahul Tripathi were also the new names amongst the leading batsmen of this season. Lynn and Pant were not surprise picks as their potential has been known for a while. But Tripathi was surely someone who impressed everyone with his stylish batting and stepping up as a dependable player for his team.
