Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the 11th player to captain his side in 50 Tests or more when India took on South Africa in the first Test at Johannesburg. Dhoni took over the reins of Test captaincy in 2008, when Anil Kumble retired and is by far the most successful leader for India in the format.
Here is a list of captains who have led their sides in over 50 Tests:
*Updated after India vs South Africa 1st Test played from December 18-22, 2013
In this list, Dhoni and Smith are the only two active captains as the others have retired. Dhoni should equal Michael Vaughan when India play South Africa in the second Test. The currently active player with most matches as Test captain after Smith and Dhoni is the Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene with 38. Michael Clarke is next on that list with 32.
