MS Dhoni was named the skipper of Pune’s franchise in the Indian Premier League on Monday. Pune’s owner Sanjiv Goenka named the franchise’s name— Rising Pune Supergiants (RPSG). While unveiling the team name and logo, Goenka said Raghu Iyer will be CEO for the RP-Sanjiv Goenka group’s sports vertical. “[Raghu] Iyer, previously, with Rajasthan Royals, will be joining as the CEO of the sports vertical of the group,” Goenka added. The two new franchises, Pune and Rajkot have been included for two editions of IPL after Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) were banned last year for two years. Goenka added, “I welcome Dhoni as the captain of Rising Pune Supergiants for the 2016 season. He has always been a phenomenal leader for teams that he has represented including the Indian side. His track record in both domestic and International arenas have been remarkable. I firmly believe he will lead our team extremely well on and off the field.”

“Practically we hope there will be complete harmony in the team. The likes of MS, Steve Smith and Faf du Plessis are seasoned leaders. I don’t think there will be any chance of a friction in the team. Just because we are a new team we don’t want to put out an excuse that’s we could not do this or that. We have to do what have to and we are confident of doing well. Sourav has no involvement in the team. It’s for the Ombdusman to decide, why asking me,” he said on the reported Conflict of interest scanner on Ganguly,” he said.

This will be the first time since the inception of IPL in 2008 that Dhoni will be playing for a different IPL side. He is one of the few players to have represented the same team for every edition of IPL from 2008 to 2015. It took the banning of CSK for Dhoni to finally play for a different side. The other players picked by Rising Pune Supergiants were Ravichandran Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, Steven Smith and Faf du Plessis during the IPL 2016 draft in Mumbai.

It is for the first time Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ashwin will be playing for a different franchise and more over the contest gets heated as Dhoni and Raina will be competing against each other for the very first time in the IPL. With this draft for the IPL9, Virat Kohli and Harbhajan Singh are the only two players in the T20 league to play for one franchise in all the editions.
