The Supreme Court on Friday announced that Justice Mukul Mudgal will head the probe panel in the IPL 2013 spot-fixing scandal which broke out exactly a year back. The committee has been asked to submit the report in end-August.

The apex court brushed aside the Board of Control for Cricket in India‘s (BCCI) protests and accepted all suggestions by Mudgal committee, reported cricket historian Boria Majumdar.

Earlier, Justice Mukul Mudgal had agreed to investigate the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2013 betting and spot-fixing controversy after the Supreme Court asked him to. Supreme Court had rejected the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) panel and had asked Mudgal to investigate, giving him and his panel time till 14:00 hours on Tuesday to respond. Mudgal had agreed to start the investigation.
The BCCI had appointed Ravi Shastri, RK Raghavan and Justice JN Patel to investigate after the Supreme Court had told the board to do so, to maintain their institutional autonomy. However, there were questions of conflict of interest over the trio. The Supreme Court as a result rejected those recommended names and then asked Mudgal if he would want to do it.
Mudgal and his committee had handed their report in February. In a detailed report, they had included their findings after interviewing many cricketers, administrators etc. The report is said to contain the name of 13 individuals, with serious allegations leveled against them. N Srinivasan is one of the individuals and he was made to step aside from the post of the president of the BCCI.
Meanwhile, the IPL itself continued with the first leg being held in the United Arab Emirates. Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were allowed to play. The next hearing of the matter is on April 29, 2014.
