New Zealand vs South Africa, 3rd ODI: AB de Villiers reaches a new milestone

South Africa One –Day International (ODI) skipper AB de Villiers reached another milestone in his blistering career by scoring 9,000 ODI runs. He achieved this feat in the 3rd ODI against New Zealand at Wellington. De Villiers has become the fastest to reach this milestone having got in just 205 innings. De Villiers overtook former India skipper Sourav Ganguly who stood first to reach this milestone in the 228 innings. De Villiers is the 18th player and second South African behind Jacques Kallis to reach the 9,000 mark and is the only one of the leading scorers to have a strike-rate better than 100. Tendulkar has the most ODI runs with 18,426 but averages 44.83 with a strike rate of 86.23.

De Villiers has played 214 ODIs (including the 3 rd against New Zealand) and has staggering numbers with an average of 53.86 with a strike-rate almost of 100 (99.94). The 33-year old stepped down from Test captaincy last year to concentrate on his game but has enjoyed his time as the 50-over skipper. South Africa under his captaincy accomplished the feat of winnings 12 ODI consecutive games under his captaincy which was recently ended by Kane Williamson-led New Zealand in the second ODI at Christchurch.

South Africa are playing a five-game ODI series against New Zealand in New Zealand which is part of their long tour which comprises of 1 Twenty20 International (T20I), 5 ODIs and 3 Tests. South Africa have already won the only T20I game followed by winning the first ODI at Hamilton. But the hosts pulled off a win in the second ODI to level the series.
