South Africa started the tour on the right note. Winning the one-off T20I at Auckland, they came on top of the hosts in the series opener by a whisker. The first ODI went down to the wire wherein hosts emerged winners by 4 wickets (D/L method). The second game promised more intensity and did not disappoint. New Zealand batted first to post a healthy total of 288 for 4 in 50 overs courtesy Ross Taylor’s century.

Proteas did not deter in the chase but Kiwis kept coming back hard. Quinton de Kock (57) and AB de Villiers (45) led South Africa’s fightback before they were reduced to 214 for 8. Nonetheless, a late flourish by Dwaine Pretorius kept them in the hunt only to be overshadowed by Trent Boult’s tight finish. With this, both sides have won one game each and will again come hard to take a vital lead. The series is going neck-to-neck and the remaining three games are expected to spring close finishes as well.
