Winning the toss, South Africa elected to bat first but were soon reduced to 5 for 2. Openers Dean Elgar and debutant Theunis de Bruyn were sent back early. The repair job was then left for Hashim Amla and JP Duminy, who added 59 runs for the third wicket. Duminy (20) fell at this point, bringing skipper Faf du Plessis in the middle. The two senior batsmen then added 33 runs for the fourth wicket before Amla departed after scoring exact 50.
Du Plessis (33)* and Temba Bavuma (13)* then saw through the remaining period by adding 26 runs in the unfinished partnership for fifth wicket before the rain forced stumps immediately after tea. For New Zealand, Matt Henry and Colin de Grandhomme picked up two wickets each. On Day Two, New Zealand will aim for quick wickets while South Africa will look to add as many runs to the total as possible.
