BJ Watling will not keep wickets during the first Test between New Zealand and West Indies at Basin Reserve, Wellington. It is reported that the wicketkeeper-batsman has not yet recovered from a hip injury that he suffered during a Plunkett Sheffield contest between Northern Knights and Central Stags.

The uncapped Tom Blundell is likely to keep wickets. However, his addition will be confirmed only after New Zealand A’s match against West Indies.

Watling has not been keeping wickets since the last four Plunkett Shield matches. All the same, he will remain a part of the squad, and may as well play as a specialist batsman.

For that matter, Watling has not missed any Test since his debut against England in 2013 at Headingly.

To add more to the list of injuries, Martin Guptill has hamstring niggle, Colin Munro is ill, and Adam Milne has a back problem.

New Zealand squad: Kane Williamson(c), Tom Latham, Jeet Raval, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, BJ Watling, Mitchell Santner, Colin de Grandhomme, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult, Matt Henry
