The second day of the ongoing third Test between Pakistan and New Zealand at Sharjah was postponed to the following day following the news of Phillip Hughes’s death taking the cricket fraternity by a storm. The Test is now extended by a day, and the second day will be played on Friday.
Pakistan were supposed to resume from their overnight score of 281 for three, with Mohammad Hafeez and Misbah-ul-Haq batting on scores of 178 and 38 respectively. The outbreak of the news of Hughes’ death however, created an atmopsphere of gloom in both dressing rooms. Pakistan are still in a position of dominance in the Test so far, and look set to post a big total with Hafeez likely to score his first Test double-ton.
Australian batsman Hughes had suffered a fatal blow while attempting to play a pull shot off a bouncer bowled by Sean Abbott during a Sheffield Shield game between South Australia and New South Wales at Sydney on November 25. Hughes collapsed to the ground face-first, and was airlifted to a hospital immediately in a critical condition. He was declared dead by the doctors in the morning after battling for his life for two days.
