Pune: Like his batting, Virender Sehwag is blazing all guns on tweeter too. The former India opener has 8.7 million followers on tweeter. But the witty Jat from Delhi dismisses these .numbers in his on way. “Mujhe aankde acche nahi lagte par phir bhi aankde maine hi banaye hen.” Sehwag was at his wittiest best in a candid session with TV presenter Gaurav Kapoor at the Xolo SporTale, sport themed literary fest organised by InsideSport and Sporty Soluitonz here today.
The former India international also confidently proclaimed that the current Indian cricket team was the strongest he had seen. “The balance that this team has, the quality of their fast bowlers and spinners accompanied by the batting firepower makes this the best Indian team. This team has the capability of winning a Test series abroad,” he said. Sehwag predicted that the Indian team has enough in the tank to win the upcoming Test series against Australia by a 3-0 or a 3-1 margin but also sounded a note of caution. “This team has been playing fantastic cricket. They have won 8 of their last 9 Tests and that is a great achievement. But the law of averages catches up with every team and in my reading, there will be a Test in this series where the bowling might not fire or the batsmen will slip up,” he said.
The dashing right-hander had words of high praise for current India captain Virat Kohli, anointing him the best player in all three forms in world cricket currently. “Virat has matured hugely. He is a world-class player and I think that he might break all records in a format by the time he calls time on his career,” he said. Sehwag also said that off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had a realistic chance of challenging for the record of highest wicket-taker in Test cricket provided he took care of his body and maintained his fitness.
Sehwag also shed light on his wildly popular Twitter account, his funny retorts on the social media platform and also his relationship with his illustrious peers in the Indian cricket team. “I Tweet from the heart. Be it Jallikattu or the women’s cricket team doing well, I write what I feel like at the moment. I believe that a lot of cricketers are very diplomatic in their interactions. Harbhajan Singh though is quite entertaining on social media,” he said.
Answering a question on MS Dhoni’s removal as skipper of the Rising Pune Supergiant, Sehwag said that it was a sad decision and that Dhoni was perhaps India’s best captain. “I am happy that he isn’t captain because maybe now my team, Kings XI Punjab, can beat this Pune team. On a serious note, I believe that this is an internal decision of the franchise but he is one of the best ever captains India has ever had,” he said.
