Prithvi Shaw and Sachin Tendulkar’s rise can be compared in many ways. Both were child prodigies from Mumbai, destined to go a long way since their early teens. Prithvi idolises Tendulkar and borrows a chunk of his batting style from the master.

Fans based in and around Mumbai had already begun comparisons even before Prithvi played First-Class cricket. Ian Bishop could not help but exclaimed, “That’s Tendulkar” when Shaw drove a ball through off-side during the India-Australia group match in the U-19 World Cup earlier this year. Now Australian legend Mark Waugh has joined the chorus.

Waugh has played a lot of cricket against Tendulkar in 1990s and early 2000s. Commenting on Prithvi’s batting technique in Star Sports’ Select Dugout show, Waugh said: “The first thing you notice is his technique, it’s very similar to Sachin Tendulkar. His grip, his stance, he stays very still at the crease and plays all his shots around the wicket.

“He plays the ball quite late and is quite punchy in his stroke play and has an excellent base to play any shot from any bowler. He’s just so much like Sachin.”

Prithvi slammed a 25-ball 47 in Delhi Daredevils (DD) win on over Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday. He has accumulated 140 runs at a strike rate of 166.66 from four games in the ongoing VIVO IPL 2018. Prithvi made his maiden half-century in only his second match of the tournament and in doing so, he became the joint youngest to the landmark.

Prithvi is having a wonderful year having led India Under-19 team to ICC U-19 World Cup triumph.
