Teenage prodigy Prithvi Shaw finally ended his run drought in the Under-19 ODI series. On Monday, the Mumbai batsman slammed an 89-ball 105 in the fourth ODI between India U-19 and England U-19 at Wankhede Stadium. He added 231 runs for the second wicket with opener Shubman Gill, who scored 160. Prithvi batted at No.3. He was dropped from the third ODI after poor scores of 9 and 12 in the first two games. His brisk hundred ensured the Rahul Dravid-coached India U-19 to 382 for 9. However, father Pankaj, who has been the guiding force in Prithvi’s career, feels the 17-year-old should cut down on the unnecessary rash shots.
Prithvi reached his hundred from 81 deliveries. He was caught trying to clear the long-on and the senior Shaw was not at all pleased with that. In an interview with mid-day from the sidelines of the match, Pankaj said. “I deliberately came to watch this match after India’s innings, because whenever I’m at the ground, Prithvi feels the pressure while batting. I think he needs to show more maturity while shaping his innings.” Speaking about the dismissal, Pankaj felt it was good opportunity for Prithvi to add more to his run tally as 7 overs still remained in the innings. “Today too, I heard he was playing well and had a good chance to score more runs, but got out to a shot which was unnecessary,” Pankaj further added. Losing his mother at the age of 4, Pankaj has donned the role of both the parents for Prithvi, and has also been his friend.“It was not an easy routine for him and he understood that. He was young and as a parent, my duty was to help him keep the focus. I had to be strict at times. To make your ward attain optimum level, one has to be strict at times,” Pankaj had told CricketCountry in an exclusive interview last month. Prithvi Shaw takes a step closer towards prophecy
Having scored a century on his Mumbai debut in the Ranji Trophy semi-final last month, Prithvi finally scored his first U-19 hundred. Prithvi, who had taken the cricket world by a storm with his 546 in school cricket in 2013, is tipped to be the next batting superstar of Indian cricket.
Following the footsteps of the senior team that beat England in the Test, ODI and T20I series, the India U-19 side has now taken an unassailable lead of 3-1 in the ODI series with the 230-run win. The last ODI will be played on Wednesday.
