Rohit Sharma is set to lead Mumbai for their next Ranji Trophy tie against defending champions Rajasthan at Jaipur beginning November 9, after captain Ajit Agarkar was dropped due to a calf strain.

The former India bowler’s name was missing from the Mumbai squad travelling to Jaipur after he injured his calf during his team’s first-round draw against Railways. Agarkar has joined Kerala’s Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and Baroda duo Munaf Patel and Irfan Pathan on the sidelines.

The Mumbai squad is also sans other big players — Sachin Tendulkar, Ajinkya Rahane and Zaheer Khan — all three of will join the Indian national squad for a conditioning camp in Mumbai on November 9 prior to the four-match Test series against England starting November 15.

Taking on a resurgent Rajasthan side that won the last two editions of the 78-year-old tournament, Mumbai will welcome those players who represented a Mumbai XI in the warm-up game against the touring Englishmen at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Mumbai’s leading run-getter last season, Suryakumar Yadav, will join the ranks along with young Kshemal Waingankar — who took three wickets against England — and Hiken Shah who averaged 58 with the bat last season.

Agarkar, however, will be relieved to find that Mumbai is one of the three teams which is not scheduled to play a match in the third round of the Ranji Trophy starting November 17. The 34-year-old will have more than two weeks to recover before Mumbai’s next outing against Hyderabad on November 24.

Mumbai squad: Rohit Sharma (captain), Ramesh Powar, Iqbal Abdullah, Suryakumar Yadav, Dhawal Kulkarni, Kaustubh Pawar, Abhishek Nayar, Akhil Herwadkar, Hiken Shah, Aditya Tare, Kshemal Waingankar, Shardul Thakur, Ankit Chavan, Shoaib Shaikh.
