Playing for Karnataka against Delhi in the Ranji Trophy 2015-16 encounter at Hubballi, Robin Uthappa made his way to the record books. He slammed 148 in a mere 141 balls with 16 fours and 6 sixes, taking Karnataka to an emphatic 358 for 3 by stumps. He got support from Mayank Agarwal, whose 118 came off a mere 209 balls. The pair put up 236 at a breakneck 4.78. During his innings, Uthappa took 32 runs off a single over from off-spinner Dhruv Shorey, who was bowling in First-Class cricket for the first time. The 32 scored by Uthappa is the joint sixth-most runs scored by a batsman off an over (irrespective of the number of balls bowled in the over). The world record, of course, is held by Garry Sobers and Ravi Shastri, both of whom hit six sixes in single overs to take the tally for the respective overs is 36. Ross Edwards once took 34 in an 8-ball over of Joey Carew (40446664) for New Zealand Governor-General’s XI against the touring West Indians at Eden Park, 1968-69, which remains the 8-ball over record. Uthappa’s 32 is also the second among Indians, and the second in Ranji Trophy — both after Shastri’s 36. This, of course, does not include ‘joke bowling’, or deliberate poor bowling with the intention to let the opposition score quick runs. Bert Vance once conceded 77 in an over (the umpire counted one ball less amidst the confusion, so it was a 5-ball over). READ: Bert Vance concedes 77 off one over!

– Poor Stephen Moreton was bowling his first over when Craig Spearman launched into him.

– Tudor’s over was actually the most expensive in history. He also bowled two no-balls. According to prevalent ECB rules, the two no-balls contributed to 4 runs (2 from each), thus taking Tudor’s tally off the over to 38.

– Playing for Tamil Nadu against Goa in Ranji Trophy 1995-96, S Sharath and Reuben Paul combined to score 31 runs in an over from debutant Raj Naik at Madras. Sharath took a single off the first ball before Paul hit 5 sixes. It was the previous record, both in Ranji Trophy and by an Indian (pair in this case).
